Marcus Rashford 'looks miserable" at Manchester United and is the "weak link" in the attack, claims Michael Owen.
The forward's United return has yet to produce the goals or assists expected of him, with Michael Owen believing there could be a problem behind the scenes.
Rashford returned to Old Trafford this summer after loan spells with Birmingham and Barcelona, where he appeared to rediscover some of the interest that had deserted him during a difficult period at United.
Wearing the No.9 shirt back at United he has failed to register either a goal or an assist in more than 400 minutes across all competitions.
Rashford has started every Premier League game apart from the opening fixture and was substituted in the 77th minute of United’s draw at Fulham, with Joshua Zirkzee replacing him.
United’s lack of attacking output has also contributed to his slow start, with Michael Carrick’s side scoring just eight goals in their opening five league matches. Five of those came in the same game.
But Owen believes Rashford’s individual performances remain a concern. “On the left, Marcus Rashford has probably been the most disappointing of those attackers,” Owen said.
The former United striker also questioned Rashford’s body language and suggested there could be factors away from the pitch affecting his performances.
“He was quiet again in his body language, just looking miserable,” Owen said. “It seems like he’s not enjoying football. It seems like he’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders and you think, how? Why? He’s living everyone’s dream.
“Surely there’s something going on behind the scenes that makes it look like he’s not enjoying football at the moment.”
Owen also pointed to Barcelona’s decision not to make Rashford’s loan move permanent as evidence that his spell in Spain was not as successful as some had portrayed.
“I couldn’t believe his luck getting to a club like Barcelona,” Owen said. “He did quite well there, but not well enough for them to keep him and then they end up spending a fortune replacing him by buying Anthony Gordon.
“So not everything was perfect. It wasn’t all rosy despite the idealised picture that people wanted to paint. And then he comes back to Manchester United. He’s done OK, but only OK.”
Rashford’s place in the starting XI could now come under greater scrutiny when Amad Diallo returns from injury, while are calling on Matheus Cunha to move out to the left as he did for much of last season under Carrick.
Owen believes that scenario could leave Rashford as the player to make way. “Rashford is the weak link,” he said.
For Rashford, the challenge is now to turn his promising return into consistent production before competition for places intensifies at Old Trafford.
